GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing content to be cited and surfaced by generative AI search experiences like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and Bing Copilot.

GEO overlaps heavily with AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and is sometimes used interchangeably. If you draw a distinction, AEO is the broader discipline (be the answer) and GEO is its generative-AI-specific application.

What GEO actually optimizes

Unlike traditional SEO where the goal is to rank a page in a list of results, GEO optimizes for citation within a synthesized answer. That means:

  • The model needs to find your content
  • The model needs to trust your content
  • The model needs to be able to quote your content cleanly

The core GEO playbook

  1. Write in self-contained, quotable passages. Each section should answer one question completely.
  2. Use clear, declarative sentences. Models lift clean sentences more reliably than hedged prose.
  3. Structure with H2s and H3s. Use the question as the heading.
  4. Add a “Key takeaways” or TL;DR block at the top of long articles.
  5. Cite sources and statistics. Models weight cited claims more heavily.
  6. Implement structured data. Schema markup and Article schemas help parsers.

What GEO is not

  • It is not a replacement for SEO. Strong technical SEO and E-E-A-T are the foundation.
  • It is not a way to “trick” AI into citing you. Models are trained to ignore manipulation.
  • It is not a guarantee of citation. Generative answers are probabilistic, and many factors are outside your control.

Measuring GEO

GEO metrics are still maturing. Track:

  • Referral traffic from AI search (use UTM-tagged pages if possible)
  • Brand mentions in AI-generated answers (manual spot-checks)
  • AI-overview citation rate for your top keywords (rank-tracker tools are starting to surface this)
