GEO: terminology, evidence, and measurement

If you need the short answer, Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is an informal industry label, not an official Google or OpenAI ranking program. Google’s current documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode still rely on the same core Search systems and do not require special AI markup. OpenAI’s crawler documentation separates search visibility, training access, and user-triggered browsing into different user agents. That means “GEO” is only useful if you document which product, which mode, which evidence layer, and which result you are talking about.

The label was popularized by the research paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, which tested content interventions inside a specific benchmark. Treat that paper as research input, not as proof that one repeatable tactic works across every current search product, model, language, or market.

What current first-party sources actually support

For Google Search:

  • Google’s AI features guide says standard SEO best practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no extra technical requirements and no required special files or markup.
  • Google’s generative AI optimization guide says Google Search may use retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out, but it also says this is still SEO from Google’s perspective, not a separate GEO program.
  • Google’s third-party SEO guidance explicitly tells site owners to verify AEO/GEO claims against official guidance instead of accepting vendor promises.

For OpenAI:

  • OpenAI’s crawler documentation separates OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search visibility, GPTBot for training access, and ChatGPT-User for user-triggered browsing.
  • Allowing OAI-SearchBot can affect ChatGPT search eligibility, while blocking GPTBot only affects training access. Those are different controls and different evidence layers.
  • ChatGPT-User is not used to determine whether content appears in Search, so a user-triggered fetch is not proof of search visibility.

This is the operational boundary that most GEO articles flatten. Access, retrieval, attribution, and outcomes are related, but they are not the same event.

Separate the evidence layers

  1. Eligibility and access: Could the relevant crawler or retrieval path reach the page successfully?
  2. Retrieval: Was this page actually selected for the query, product, and mode you tested?
  3. Representation: Did the answer represent the page’s claim accurately?
  4. Attribution: Was there a visible citation, link, or named source?
  5. Outcome: Did the visibility produce a qualified visit, signup, lead, or other useful action?

A crawler hit proves access, not retrieval. A mention proves one observed answer, not durable preference. A citation proves visible attribution in that run, not market share.

Validate the page before expanding the topic

Use this sequence before claiming a GEO page needs more content:

  1. Check page-level Search Console data for the last 28 complete days.
  2. If the page has no visible rows, confirm whether the problem is indexing or simply weak demand.
  3. Compare the page’s role against adjacent GEO, AEO, LLMO, citation, and analytics pages before adding sections.

For sc-domain:fennecseo.app, Search Console’s official API with dataState=final for 2026-07-11 to 2026-08-07 returned no visible page row and no visible query row for this English GEO URL. That is not proof of zero demand, because Search Analytics can return only top rows, but it does mean there is no current evidence for broad page-level traction.

On 2026-08-09, Search Console URL Inspection showed this URL as Submitted and indexed, INDEXING_ALLOWED, mobile crawl successful, and self-canonicalized to https://fennecseo.app/wiki/geo-generative-engine-optimization/, with last crawl time 2026-08-03T22:12:09Z. So the current risk is weaker role clarity, not an obvious indexing failure.

What site owners can actually improve

  • Keep important information on stable, crawlable, indexable canonical URLs.
  • Publish original evidence with methods, dates, units, limitations, and corrections.
  • Make entities and relationships explicit without inventing facts or unsupported markup.
  • Use headings, tables, summaries, and structured data only when they help the human task and match visible content.
  • Build a fixed, versioned test set and save complete results, including failures and contradictory outputs.
  • Connect visibility observations to referrals and business outcomes instead of reporting mentions alone.

Google’s current documentation is explicit that creating separate content for every query variant or fan-out branch just to manipulate rankings can violate the scaled content abuse policy. GEO should not become a justification for spinning out thin pages around every AI-search phrasing.

Claims that need rejection or qualification

  • “Question headings make models cite a page.” They may improve readability, but they do not establish causation.
  • “Schema increases AI citation probability.” Supported markup can help eligible systems interpret content, but no universal citation lift is documented.
  • “Allowing an AI crawler guarantees visibility.” Access is only the first layer.
  • “Ten prompts are enough to report GEO market share.” Small prompt sets are observations, not representative estimates.
  • “One GEO tactic works across every engine.” Products differ in retrieval sources, indexes, policies, and interfaces.
  • “No visible GSC row means the page failed.” It may instead mean weak demand, top-row limits, or overlap with nearby pages.

A reproducible GEO observation record

For each test, save the query, full answer, product, model or mode, login state, market, language, date and time, visible citations, resolved destination URLs, and whether analytics recorded a referral. Repeat the same set over time and report uncertainty, no-citation runs, and contradictory answers beside successful observations.
